Why are some links so long?
A copied link can contain settings, identifiers or redirects in addition to its actual destination. Being long does not automatically make a link unsafe or wrong.

A copied link can contain settings, identifiers or redirects in addition to its actual destination. Being long does not automatically make a link unsafe or wrong.
The extra weight in a link often starts only after the actual destination address. Alongside the domain and path, it can contain settings, campaign information, click IDs or hints that it redirects elsewhere.
Some of this information is needed by the destination page; other parts mainly support attribution or measurement. That is why length is not the deciding factor – the function of each part is.

shop.example.com/product/backpack identifies the website and the specific product page.
colour=blue and size=30l can control the variant that is shown.
utm_* and gclid can carry origin or click-attribution information.
This is a synthetic example. It shows that a long link can contain both useful and additional information.
The domain and path together form the destination address. The domain identifies the website; the path identifies the specific page or resource within it.
After a question mark, the optional query string begins. It contains name-value parameters such as ?colour=blue. Several parameters are separated by &, for example ?colour=blue&size=30l.

Search, language, sorting, product variants or page states can each require their own parameter.
Names such as utm_source or utm_campaign often describe where a visit came from.
Long identifiers such as gclid can attribute a click to an ad or platform.
A link may first go through a service or describe access to a particular share. That makes it technically longer without making it suspicious.

A parameter is not unnecessary just because it appears after a question mark. It can control a search, filter, language, product variant, invitation link or time-limited access.
Other values are often not needed to display the destination page, but may explain where a link came from. Without checking, you cannot reliably tell from a name or its length alone.

If you do not recognise a link, check the domain first and do not open it too quickly. Its length is only a reason to take a closer look, not a judgment about safety or trustworthiness.
