What's inside an image file?

An image file contains various kinds of information: the visible image – and details your device saves automatically, such as when a photo was taken, with which device, sometimes even where.

Metadata is one part of that – but an image file can contain further information too. You can't see it in the image, yet it can be carried along when you share.

What metadata can be contained?

Depending on the device and editing, an image file can hold more than the subject:

  • Where – the location via GPS, if it was saved
  • When – date and time the photo was taken
  • With what – camera, smartphone, lens, capture settings
  • How edited – software used and editing steps
  • From whom – author, copyright, descriptions

Technically these extra data are called EXIF, IPTC or XMP. You don't need to remember that: SafeShare Image Cleaner aims to translate every entry into plain language – no jargon, no prior knowledge. And metadata is only the start: SafeShare aims to help make the whole image file understandable – not just its metadata.

What is metadata in an image?

Invisible extra details your device saves automatically – such as the time taken, the device used, or, if saved, the location. They aren't part of the visible subject.

Are my images uploaded?

No. SafeShare Image Cleaner is designed for local processing. Your images stay on your device – no upload, no cloud.

Why does SafeShare process images locally?

Because privacy begins where data doesn't have to leave your device.

Is metadata dangerous?

Usually not. But it can reveal more than you intend when sharing. That's why it helps to know about it.

Can I remove every piece of metadata?

No. SafeShare Images uses one fixed conservative rule for supported JPEG and PNG files. Points that cannot be determined safely or are not supported are shown as procedure boundaries.
