What is a click ID?

A click ID is a random-looking identifier in a link that connects a single click to an ad or campaign – the destination of the link usually does not need it.

Local-first: No upload, no cloud, no AI – the cleanup happens directly in your browser, on your device.

What is a click ID?

A click ID is an extra URL parameter that advertising and platform systems attach to links. It connects a single click to a specific ad, campaign or platform.

?gclid=Cj0abc123xyz

Typical advertising click IDs are gclid (Google Ads), msclkid (Microsoft Advertising) and ttclid (TikTok Ads). fbclid, by contrast, is a Meta identifier that can be added when links are shared; it is not a classic advertising click ID. The value is usually a long, random-looking string.

The content that the link opens usually does not need the click ID. The page, product or article works without it.

After

Try it yourself: Copy this test link, paste it into SafeShare and compare original and result. The click ID and the campaign parameter are unnecessary – lang=en is functional and stays, so the language choice is not lost.

Not every string is a click ID

Long, cryptic values in a link are not automatically click IDs. Some are functional – for example session, product or form identifiers that the destination page actually needs.

Rule of thumb: Check first, then remove. You recognize a click ID by its known name like gclid – not by the length of the value.

What SafeShare removes – and what stays

Not every parameter is pure tracking. Some keys are functionally necessary, for example for language, search, filters, variants or IDs. That is why it is better to check links instead of simply deleting everything after the question mark.

Typically removable extras

  • gclid
  • fbclid
  • msclkid
  • ttclid
  • dclid

Handle with care

  • Search terms (e.g. q)
  • Language settings (e.g. lang)
  • Page numbers (e.g. page)
  • Video timestamps (e.g. t)
  • Product or variant IDs

SafeShare is not meant to break links. The app helps make recognizable link extras visible and use cleaned links deliberately.

How to clean the link

Three ways, depending on your device. The check runs local-first – the link does not have to be uploaded to a SafeShare server for this.

iPhone & iPad

  1. Copy the link or pass it on via the share menu.
  2. Run the SafeShare shortcut.
  3. Paste or share the cleaned link directly.

Honest scope

  • Yes: SafeShare reduces recognized tracking and click parameters in URLs before sharing.
  • No: SafeShare is not a VPN, not an ad blocker and not complete tracking protection.
  • In short: a concrete hygiene step – not a promise of invisibility.

When a quick check becomes a workflow

For individual links, SafeShare Free is enough – permanently and free of charge.

If you regularly check, explain or document links before sending – for example in newsletters, editorial content, customer communication or team approvals – SafeShare Link Review is the next step: understand, check, document.

Your newsletter tool checks whether the link works.
SafeShare Link Review shows what is inside the link.

FAQ

What is a click ID?

A click ID is an extra URL parameter that connects a single click to an ad or campaign. Well-known examples are gclid, msclkid and ttclid.

Does the destination page need the click ID?

Usually not. The content normally loads without the ID. It serves the attribution of the click, not the function of the page.

Is every long string in a link a click ID?

No. Some values are functional, for example session or product identifiers. When in doubt, check the link instead of guessing parameters.

Does removing a click ID make me anonymous?

No. It only removes this visible URL parameter. It does not block all tracking signals and does not prevent server logs.

Are links uploaded?

No. SafeShare is local-first. The cleanup happens in your browser. Links are not uploaded to SafeShare servers for this.
